hair bands in southern China threatening to spread

sexually-transmitta ble diseases they were originally

meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday

In the la test example of potentially harmful Chinese-made

products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets

and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in

southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.

‘These cheap and colorful rubber bands and hair ties sell well …..

Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain

bacteria and viruses, it said.

‘People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other

diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths

while waving their hair into plaits or buns,’ the paper quoted a

local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying.

A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 sen (three cents),

much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity,

the paper said.

A government official was quoted as saying recycling condoms

was illegal.. China ‘s manufacturing industry has been

repeatedly tarnished this year by a string of scandals

involving shoddy or dangerous goods made for both

domestic and foreign markets.

In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer

aimed at playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems.

here that our govt has to be extra careful on these cheap imports

from china. These includes clothes, food, toys, slippers and even

glasses because the Chinese are using some strong but cheap

chemical in their manufactures. Cheap is becoming expensive

and at the same time fatal. I nearly bought one pair of the slippers

below for myself last week at the Japanese $2 shop at IMM last week.

These slippers are also sold in Walmart, USA and same complaints received.

Researchers at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, United States believe that they have found the purpose of the vermiform appendix, long thought to be useless.

The theory, published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, is that the appendix creates and protects helpful microorganisms for a person’s digestive system.

For years, scientists believed that the appendix served no purpose, and wondered why it was even present in the human body. Surgeons removed them regularly, and it seemed to have no ill effects on the health of patients.

In addition, when infected the appendix became harmful and even deadly. Inflammation occurs quickly and can cause death if the infected organ is not removed in time. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2005 321,000 Americans were stricken with appendicitis. On average, 300 to 400 Americans die of appendicitis each year.

The new theory, proposed by surgeons and immunologists at the Duke University School of Medicine, says that people throughout most of human history lived in small, spread out groups. As a result, their contact with other people was far more limited than it is today in modern industrialized societies. Today, if a person’s digestive tract lacks helpful bacteria, they can regain the needed germs from contact with large numbers of other people. In times when populations were less dense, and cholera epidemics purged large numbers of people’s useful digestive bacteria, the appendixwas able to restore the digestive system’s supply of helpful germs.

"[The
appendix] acts as a good safe house for bacteria," said Duke surgery professor Bill Parker, a co-author in the study. He said the appendix’s location–below the one-way passage of food and germs through the large intestine in a digestive cul-de-sac helps validate the theory. The worm-shaped appendage also acts to manufacture these helpful germs, Parker said.

Parker added that in less developed societies with lower population densities, the appendix may still be useful and rates of appendicitis are lower. However, regardless of the appendix’s apparent function, Parker confirmed that those suffering from appendicitis should still have it removed.

Scientists not affiliated with the study have come out in favor of the theory. Brandeis University biochemistry professor Douglas Theobald said the idea was the most likely purpose of the appendix. "It makes evolutionary sense."

I began painting feathers back in 1990, purely as a means of putting to use all the broad sturdy wing feathers that my mother’s peacocks would shed. I had never seen this done before, but knowing the bonding properties of acrylic paint, I thought it was a feasible experiment. I began with simple subject matters like pictographs and still-life’s, but soon that grew to a very broad range of subject matter.

The feather paintings also feature in a of folk singer Gordon Lightfoot’s song "Cherokee Bend".

The river, world famous for its colourful display, has been called "the river that ran away to paradise", "the most beautiful river in the world" and "the river of five colours". Information about the river published on the Atlas Obscura website notes:

During Colombia’s wet season, the water flows fast and deep, obscuring the bottom of the river and denying the mosses and algae that call the river home the sun that they need. And during the dry season there is not enough water to support the dazzling array of life in the river. But during a brief span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right, the many varieties of algae and moss bloom in a dazzling display of colors. Blotches of amarillo, blue, green, black, and red – and a thousand shades in between – coat the river.

As noted in the message, the part of the river where the colourful blooms occur is quite isolated and is not accessible by road. Adventurous tourists can now fly into La Macarena and then make their way to to the river site on foot as part of guided tours. The site was effectively closed to tourists for several years because of FARC guerrilla activity in the region along with concerns about the impact of unregulated tourist traffic. The Caño Cristales site, located about two hours walk from the town of La Macarena, will be open to visitors until November 10, when the summer season dries out the algae and the river loses it magnificent colours.

According to new regulations visits to the site are made up of groups of up to 20 people, taken throughout the day by four guides. The tours will follow four clearly marked and authorized paths and one is no longer permitted to stay overnight or cook, as this was ruining the area previously.

Even so, reports indicate that some intrepid visitors still made it to the river during the years it was officially closed to tourists.

A 3.2 x 2.1 meter (10 x 7 ft) work of Astro Boy pixel art made from 138,000 recycled Tokyo Metro tickets is on temporary display at the Shinjuku Takashimaya Department Store (2nd floor) to mark the opening of Tokyo’s new Fukutoshin subway line. Created by volunteers from Takashimaya and other Shinjuku-area businesses, the work depicts Astro Boy, Uran, Professor Ochanomizu and Higeoyaji (Mr. Mustachio) in Shinjuku along with the new Fukutoshin train.

The Big Picture is a project to create the biggest photo album in the West Midlands where the people there submitted over 110,000 photos. The photos are then used to create a huge record breaking photo mosaic the size of three tennis courts which was unveiled at Birmingham’s Thinktank at Millenium Point on 23rd August 2008.
